We arrived early at Beijing. Our first contact with China was an impressive airport that was waiting for us. It was a grey day. We were wondering if it was because of the weather or the pollution. Anyway this did not affect our happy feelings to be near our destination.
After bargaining the price with the taxi driver we finally arrived at the hotel to have some rest. Only a few hours later we were back in the air again, flying to Songpan together with the UNICEF China team.
Landing between the mountains, we arrived at the airport. The local authorities were waiting for us with a big smile and a special gift: a white scarf as a symbol of respect.
No doubt it was a warm welcome compared to the cold weather and snow in the mountains. At that moment we had a contradictory feeling: Is this a tribute for us? We all thought it should be for them who are working here for the children and their future.
On our way to the city centre we did our first van trip. With wide open eyes we discovered a lot of new things: the temples, the mountains, the bikes and the Tibetan colourful flags flying in the air and sharing the prays all around the world.
At the end of this intense day we enjoyed a fabulous “hot – pot”. While the hosts were giving us a master class in chop sticks, they made us feel their willingness to share their projects with us during the next days…
