The beginning of an exceptional and unforgettable adventure.
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always been drawn towards other people: listening to, helping and supporting others, no matter how. I’ve always wanted to take part to a mission somewhere in the world to support the people who need it the most. But I always felt like my limited English proficiency was a hindrance.
I can’t describe my happiness when I was told that I was selected as one of the ambassadors for the next IWitness trip with the IKEA Foundation and their partner UNICEF in Kenya. Only a company with such strong and meaningful values like IKEA could give me this life opportunity.
Together with my fellow IWitness ambassadors Charlie, Courtney, Donia and Elise, we’re off to Kenya for the first time of our life, on Sunday 23 September. This eastern African country has a population of 48 million inhabitants and Nairobi, its capital, stands at 1600m above sea level.
Once through passport and security check we take off. Destination: Nairobi! While looking at my fellow ambassadors, I can see the same confident smile on all of them. We’re definitely all ready to make the most of every minute of the trip.
However, I still have a doubt within me: will I be up to the task? Our programme there is quite comprehensive: meeting the UNICEF team in Kenya and being introduced to their jobs and their engagement in the local communities they support. Sharing moments with children in the towns we are about to visit and trying my best to bring them joy and smiles.
I feel like I have been waiting for this moment my entire life. And I really hope to be able to bring them as much love as they’ll give to us.
Nairobi, here we come!
