Today is the third day of our IWitness trip. We’re ready to leave the capital of Ethiopia, which has given us many surprises, for Awash—a city about six hours away from the capital. That’s where we IWitness ambassadors will have our first school visit. All excited and anxious, we hopped on the van UNICEF prepared for us, heading for the first challenge of the trip!
Before embarking on the six-hour ride, we first visited the headquarters of UNICEF to get prepared for the upcoming missions. Although we had already read a lot of relevant articles and documents before we came, it was mere textual introduction. We still had many questions concerning the people and things we were going to see and hoped they could be answered in this pre-departure briefing.
During the meeting, we not only learned that the donation coming from IKEA Foundation’s Soft Toys for Education campaign has already become the biggest donor to UNICEF, but also about the changes UNICEF is trying to make in Ethiopia with these funds and the challenges they are currently dealing with. However, the ambassadors still have many questions about the current situation and the schools.
“When you get there you’ll see what we’ve been talking about.” says Patrizia Digiovanni from UNICEF. “Maybe you’ll find the answers, or maybe you’ll have more questions.”
Sitting in the office and listening to the presentation can only help us grasp the idea with text and data. But it’s never as effective as seeing it and asking questions for ourselves on site.
Let’s hit the road! Let’s go and find answers for our questions! Let’s see for ourselves the assistance Ethiopian children have received. Tires are the only thing which will be worn out by the long journey; the enthusiasm and anticipation brought to Ethiopia by we ambassadors never will!
