It has been an eye-opening experience for us spending the last three days in Bandung. We had the chance to meet the children with disabilities who are helped by a programme from Save the Children, supported by the community. Parents shared their stories of how happy they are that their children had shown improvement step by step. Before, parents were not so open about these children. Some had almost lost hope, but today they believe that their children can be better.
We also visited inclusive schools, which give children with disabilities access to education. We were warmly welcomed by the children, teachers and parents there. We played many traditional games from Indonesia together. It was a great fun!
We ended the day by getting together with most children we met in the area. We made a circle around a bonfire with the children, parents and the community. We felt great by sharing our happiness with them and very proud that our work through the IKEA Foundation contributed and meant so much to them.
We are leaving Bandung, but this is not the end. We will always remember Rina, Ibu Ima and the volunteers in the community who made this happen. They are the real heroes. Their work will motivate even more parents, teachers and the community to give children with disabilities access to better education and better lives as we continue to fund this programme through the IKEA Foundation. Joining IWItness really made us see the real impact of what we do. This really motivates us as IKEA co-workers to make the Soft Toys for Education campaign successful. The more we deliver the items, the more the possibility we can help children with disabilities have a better future. We believe that together we can make a difference.
