Our grants

Introduction

Our grantmaking focuses on our joint commitments to help families afford a better everyday life and protect the planet.

Under these broad commitments, we give grants within six thematic areas: climate action, renewable energy, agricultural livelihoods, employment and entrepreneurship, refugee livelihoods, and special initiatives and emergencies.

We have a dedicated team of experts who work closely with our partners to manage every step of our grantmaking process and make sure we keep learning along the way.

How we make our funding decisions.

Areas we support

Our mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable children by enabling their families to create sustainable livelihoods, and fight and cope with climate change.

We fight climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In countries with high emissions, we support climate action towards net zero emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. In countries with a high poverty level, we support access to renewable energy and regenerative agricultural practices. We want to help people improve their livelihoods on a sustainable pathway consistent with net zero emissions.

We also help communities living in poverty to cope with the effects of climate change by building their incomes, assets and resilience. In high emitting countries, we help people adapt and protect their livelihoods as part of a just transition to a net zero economy.

Building on our years of experience supporting better lives for refugees and their host communities, we are committed to demonstrating the best pathways to self-reliance for urban and rural refugees.

We support entrepreneurship in our renewable energy and agricultural livelihoods work, as well as exploring how we can improve people’s livelihoods through the nascent “green economy” sector.

We continue our commitment to emergency response, supporting communities and people whose lives are disrupted by disasters that receive little media attention. We also support disaster preparedness work.

We build our capability to monitor results and evaluate impact, so we can design impactful and cost-conscious projects with our partners and produce evidence for action. We develop our teams and our projects so we can educate people and influence society at all levels—and positively impact children’s futures.

Learnings

Learning how to do things better is at the heart of our culture. We believe there are always ways to improve, so we can increase our impact for people and the planet.

As part of this, we use monitoring and evaluation to learn with our partners and with other funders. We ask our partners to consider lessons from research and evaluations when they apply for funding from us. We live our value “renew and improve” by commissioning independent evaluations of our work.

We’re open to sharing what we’ve learned and what our partners have achieved through our investments.
