Global Methane Hub
The IKEA Foundation is a part of the Global Methane Hub, a major philanthropic initiative building a global network of scientists, experts, activists, policymakers, and philanthropists rapidly reducing methane emissions.
Methane is responsible for over 40% of recent global warming and is currently the second-largest contributor to climate change. It is incredibly potent — 86 times more than CO2 — which means curbing pollution here can help stave off catastrophic changes to the climate.
Established in late 2021, The Global Methane Hub helps countries meet their methane reduction goals by funding innovative solutions—such as satellite technology to detect oil and gas leaks—across key sectors like energy, agriculture, and waste.
Reducing methane emissions brings real benefits to people: it improves air quality, helping prevent hundreds of thousands of premature deaths and asthma-related hospital visits each year, while also saving money by capturing methane as a valuable energy source.
About Global Methane Hub’s 30% by 2030 Goal
The Global Methane Hub works toward a 30% reduction in global human-caused methane emissions by 2030, measured against a 2010 baseline. This is a global target that applies across sectors — energy, agriculture, and waste — and across countries.
According to the most recent Global Methane Status Report, published by the United Nations Environment Programme’s Climate and Clean Air Coalition, current national commitments and methane action plans are projected to deliver an 8% reduction by 2030. The Global Methane Hub’s portfolio of over 150 active and pipeline projects is designed to close the gap between current commitments and the 30% goal.
