Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

a general evaluation of the organisation

June 2020

SBTi is a collaboration between four organisations: CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature. It aims to drive ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling organisations to set science-based emissions reduction targets. The IKEA Foundation funded SBTi through a grant to the We Mean Business Coalition (WMBC), which supported the initiative through grants to CDP.

This evaluation was commissioned to inform the IKEA Foundation’s decision making on the future direction, scope and size of the grant renewal to WMBC. It was intended to provide insights into SBTi’s programme strategy, governance and operating model, resource needs, communications, and user experience. This evaluation was conducted at the same time as the evaluation into WMBC and the findings were intended to complement each other.

SBTi continues to embrace the recommendations of the evaluation, including those relating to governance and measures to ensure the integrity of the target validation process.
