Refugee Livelihoods

We are committed to helping refugees achieve economic self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.

The world is experiencing a refugee crisis. Nearly 26 million people — including over 4.3 million in East Africa — have fled conflict or persecution in their home countries. Their growing numbers put tremendous pressure on the global humanitarian system. The impacts of climate change could lead to even more refugees.

We want to empower refugees to find pathways towards economic self-reliance so they can support themselves and their families. We’re working with partners who help refugees and their host communities in East Africa achieve sustainable livelihoods. Our partners work in both urban and rural settings, in the context of a changing climate, COVID-19 and other challenges.

Although governments and donors are exploring new ways of supporting refugees, progress is slow. Most refugees are still dependent upon humanitarian assistance for their basic needs.

Our mission is to generate and share evidence of what works so governments, humanitarian organisations and businesses can scale up the most effective programmes. We believe this will help make sure that millions of vulnerable refugees are not left behind as we work towards helping families afford a better life while protecting the planet.
