How we’re supporting climate action in Brazil
August 26, 2019
The new partnership between the IKEA Foundation and Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS) fosters serious climate action in one of the world’s top 10 highest emitters of CO2.
Brazil is home to 60% of the Amazon rainforest, which plays an important role in regulating rainfall and weather patterns over South America. It is also critical for its biodiversity and carbon storage. But with more than 200,000 acres of rainforest burned every day and the record number of fires this year, the future of the Amazon is severely threatened.
At the same time, Brazil has experienced significant economic growth over the past two decades, with a corresponding rise in CO2 emissions. Right now, Brazil is one of the world’s top 10 emitters of greenhouse gases through fossil fuel energy and agriculture.
Research, debate and grassroots action
Our new partnership with Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS), Brazil’s leading climate action platform, will support its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and enable the country to move towards a low-carbon economy.
To achieve the 1.5-degree target set by the Paris Agreement in 2015, Brazil needs evidence-based research to make well-informed decisions, and a rigorous public debate.
iCS will provide research to aid solid decision-making on climate matters and support local organisations to push for concrete commitments to climate action, mainly in energy, transport and land use.
Nando van Kleeff, Programme Manager at the IKEA Foundation, said: “We’re committed to taking bold action on climate change and to protecting the planet to create a better everyday life for the many people. Our partnership with iCS will galvanise a network of local organisations in Brazil and contribute to creating a liveable planet for families, now and in the future.”
