Our commitments to support refugees on the path to self-reliance

Global Refugee Forum 2019

Public sector, private sector, humanitarians, refugees, everyone: we all have a responsibility to build a world where no one is left behind.

Over the next three days, 16-18 December, IKEA and the IKEA Foundation are joining the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva. Together, we can transform international solidarity into concrete actions and improve our global response to help the world’s 25.9 million refugees. Every action counts.

IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), Inter IKEA Group and IKEA Foundation have each made different commitments that will help refugees become part of their host communities in the coming years. Our common viewpoint is that refugees, with their skills and experience, bring value to business and society.

Pledges for refugees

Ingka Group plans to support 2,500 refugees through job training and language skills initiatives in 300 stores and units in 30 countries.

Inter IKEA Group will enable 400 women to earn a sustainable living through its partnership with Jordan River Foundation.

The IKEA Foundation has committed €100 million in grants over the next five years for programmes that help both refugees and people in their host communities improve their incomes and become more self-reliant.

Access to decent work

Per Heggenes, CEO of the IKEA Foundation, said: “Record number of people are being forcibly displaced from their homes and 80% of the world’s refugees are being hosted in neighbouring countries. Many of these countries are already struggling with high levels of unemployment, making it even more difficult for refugees and their host communities to coexist peacefully. We are supporting programmes that help people who have been forced to flee, as well as the communities hosting them, to develop the skills and resources they need to earn a better income, to find employment, or to start their own businesses.”

The time has come for us to work together so that every refugee has access to decent work.

Denis Karema, CEO of @sokofreshkenya and a strong advocate for expanding access to solar-powered cooling in Kenya, showed us how these solutions make a real difference in farmers’ everyday lives.

By keeping food cold, less goes to waste — a key climate solution as temperatures continue to rise across many regions.

We had the opportunity to document how SokoFresh’s cold rooms are used in Kenya as part of our upcoming IKEA Foundation Week campaign, which will focus on food systems.

This work is supported by the IKEA Foundation and our partner @claspappliances, who are helping bring renewable energy to smallholder farmers in East Africa and India. SokoFresh is also supported by our partners #PREO and @enviu, as part of a strong nexus solution across renewable energy and agriculture work.

A huge thank you to Denis for sharing his inspiring work, and to our fantastic production team in Nairobi for bringing this story to life.

📅 More to come during #IKEAFoundationWeek, Autumn 2026.

Recently, we filmed in Nairobi with Dr Susan Chomba from the @worldresources (WRI) — who also serves on the expert panel of our partner IPES-Food — for our upcoming #IKEAFoundationWeek.

It’s a story we can’t wait to share with you.

Supporting partners closest to climate-affected communities is central to our new strategy. With Susan, we saw this in action while exploring this year’s IKEA Foundation Week focus: food systems change.

She showed us how rethinking food systems, from production to plate and beyond, can help build a more sustainable future, and the solutions that already exist to reduce food waste and lower emissions.

We’re so grateful to Susan for sharing her knowledge and passion as an environmentalist, and to our fantastic production team in Nairobi for bringing this story to life.

And finally, a huge thank you to the wider WRI team for your partnership and support throughout.

👀 We’ve been working on something exciting…

Recently, we filmed in Nairobi with Dr Susan Chomba from the @worldresources (WRI) — who also serves on the expert panel of our partner IPES-Food — for our upcoming #IKEAFoundationWeek.

It’s a story we can’t wait to share with you.

We’re so grateful to Susan for sharing her knowledge and passion as an environmentalist, and to our fantastic production team in Nairobi for bringing this story to life.

And finally, a huge thank you to the wider WRI team for your partnership and support throughout.
