Our new €300 million commitment to fight climate change

The IKEA Foundation has announced plans to spend another €300 million on climate-related programmes between 2020 and 2023 and calls on others to follow our lead.

This funding is on top of the €400 million we pledged to spend on climate programmes between 2015 and 2020, and it builds on our commitment to make fighting climate change one of our core focuses.

The new funding will be spent on programmes that cut carbon emissions and that help communities adapt to a changing climate and get access to renewable energy.

Per Heggenes, IKEA Foundation CEO, said: “This new funding brings our total climate-related commitment to €700 million between 2015 and 2023, showing our determination to protect our planet while creating a better everyday life for families in vulnerable communities.”

Global action

The announcement was part of a $4 billion USD global commitment from 29 philanthropies at the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) in San Francisco. It comes ahead of Climate Week NYC (24–30 September), which takes place every year in New York during the UN General Assembly.

The new funding will build on our previous climate action work with partners including We Mean Business, Purpose Climate Labs and SHINE.

This year we have also given new grants to European Climate Foundation and the Climate Action Network (CAN).

We’re now calling on other philanthropic and business leaders to deepen their commitment to achieving the Paris Climate Agreement targets.

  • Is it still possible to change the future of our planet? 🌍

This is the question we asked in our 2023 Annual Review, the year that marked the halfway point to the deadline for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement commitments.

No organisation can tackle the complex root causes of climate change and poverty on its own.

Thanks to the work of our partners, we’re optimistic that together, we can change the story of our planet for good! 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

In 2022, the world saw the biggest-ever jump in the number of forcibly displaced people. It’s due to this global issue that our work is focused on translating evidence into action to find durable solutions for displacement-affected communities across East Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes region of Africa 🌍

We had the opportunity to facilitate a panel at the IKEA Foundation’s Refugee Livelihoods Partners Convening to discuss the latest evidence on effective livelihoods programming in displacement settings 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

Through this, we identified a need for greater interaction between researchers and practitioners. One of our priorities is to give more of a platform to local research institutions in regions with displaced populations, as they’re better placed not only to support local policymakers but to also hold them accountable.

“The more we delay phasing out fossil fuels, the more sea level rise we’re locking ourselves into, and the earlier damages will occur. Taking action to limit warming to 1.5°C will slow sea level rise significantly,” says report reviewer and Climate Analytics CEO, Bill Hare.
