Why we’re supporting a new generation of designers

The IKEA Foundation is establishing a €33 million endowment in memory of our founder, Ingvar Kamprad, for Lund University to develop the next generation of industrial-design professionals.

By reaching beyond the traditional scope of industrial design to put people first, the Lund University School of Industrial Design has educated hundreds of industrial designers whose innovations have improved the lives of families worldwide.

Our new endowment will develop designers who will play an important role in finding creative, environmentally friendly solutions to help families enjoy safe, secure homes and communities.

Per Heggenes, IKEA Foundation CEO, says: “Designers play an important role in society and we trust that the Lund University will continue to nurture generations of highly collaborative, environmentally minded and creative designers who will help humanity better tackle the challenges of the present and future.”

We have been partially funding Lund University School of Industrial Design since its inception 20 years ago.

Our support has covered scholarships for bachelors and masters’ students, stipends for exchange students, teaching staff and administration costs. It has enabled the school to recruit talented students, quality teaching staff, and to provide a unique practical-based design education.

We have established The Ingvar Kamprad Design Foundation (IKDF) to manage the donation. This foundation is completely independent from both IKEA and IKEA Foundation and is advised by independent advisory board members. The IKEA Foundation donated €15 million at the end of 2018 and the additional €18 million will be added in March 2019.
