The United Nations says access to energy is central to nearly every major challenge and opportunity the world faces today. The number of people without access to modern electricity declined from 1.2 billion in 2010 to around 800 million in 2018. However, an estimated 620 million people will still lack access in 2030, 85% of them living in sub-Saharan Africa.

That is why we are investing in renewable energy programmes where we can help the most people, mainly in parts of Africa and Asia. We support partners who provide renewable-energy solutions that put people living in poverty at the centre of their work, making renewable-energy access easier, quicker, more affordable and more inclusive.
