Why we are committing EUR400 million for climate action

Children in the world’s poorest communities are already facing the effects of climate change. Their future is at risk, deprived of clean drinking water, denied access to education and vulnerable to disease every time it floods. Climate change is pushing the world’s poorest families beyond their capacity to respond and without urgent action, climate change impacts will only worsen.

This is why today the IKEA Foundation made a bold, new commitment of EUR 400 million through 2020 to support children and families most vulnerable to climate change.

“We’re working toward a world where children living in poverty have more opportunities to create a better future for themselves and their families. Tackling climate change is critical to achieving this goal.” Per Heggenes, CEO of the IKEA Foundation

The new funding will help poor communities build resilience to climate change and improve lives by adopting renewable energy technologies in homes, schools and businesses.

The IKEA Foundation funds programmes to create long term opportunities for children living in some of the world’s poorest communities. In 2014, the IKEA Foundation contributed €104 million to more than forty partner organizations running programmes to benefit children in 46 countries. Since 2009, programmes funded by the IKEA Foundation have helped more than 178 million children worldwide.

Decarbonising transportation is essential to decarbonising society. There are an estimated 1 billion polluting vehicles on the world’s roads, accounting for approximately 15% of annual greenhouse gas emissions. Making the shift to electric vehicles is necessary and urgent.

That’s why the IKEA Foundation recently announced a $100 million investment in Drive Electric Campaign’s new Leapfrogging Partnership: a philanthropic effort to supercharge the transition to zero-emission vehicles in emerging markets across Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Nearly 40% of the world’s transportation demand is committed to electric vehicles by 2050, driven by smart government policies and business commitments supported by Drive Electric Campaign’s network of partners.

But clean transport and its benefits – from workers saving money on fuel to children breathing cleaner air – are not yet equally distributed. The goal of the Leapfrogging Partnership is to accelerate access to clean, affordable electric vehicles all over the world.
