Hitch a ride to a clean-energy future with the New American Road Trip

The IKEA Foundation is supporting an electric-vehicle tour from San Francisco to New York, to show that Americans are ‘still in’ when it comes to stopping climate change.

The New American Road Trip, an electric-vehicle tour across America, will highlight the stories of the people, cities and emerging technologies that are fulfilling the US pledge on climate change. The tour started on 14 September and will arrive at its final destination on 26 September. Along the way, it is celebrating those who are creating jobs and economic prosperity while reducing pollution and ensuring a clean energy future.

Along the 2,906-mile journey, The New American Road Trip will hold public events in Las Vegas, Boulder, St. Louis and Pittsburgh, and award a total of $40,000 USD to local innovators who are addressing climate change in their communities.

The IKEA Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Hewlett Foundation, the JPB Foundation, and ClimateWorks Foundation have come together to support the tour and the awards.

Comedians, celebrities, mayors, governors, and many others will hitch a ride and offer a glimpse into how local leaders across the United States are making substantial progress to achieve the climate goals under the Paris Agreement.

The tour began at the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, where the summit co-chairs presented a call to action signed by city and state officials, and business leaders, all declaring their commitment to climate action and encouraging more ambitious steps from national and international leaders.

It will conclude in New York during the UN General Assembly, where the document will be delivered to the One Planet Summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The IKEA Foundation is committed to fighting for a liveable planet. That is why we are supporting the New American Road Trip.

Decarbonising transportation is essential to decarbonising society. There are an estimated 1 billion polluting vehicles on the world’s roads, accounting for approximately 15% of annual greenhouse gas emissions. Making the shift to electric vehicles is necessary and urgent.

That’s why the IKEA Foundation recently announced a $100 million investment in Drive Electric Campaign’s new Leapfrogging Partnership: a philanthropic effort to supercharge the transition to zero-emission vehicles in emerging markets across Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Nearly 40% of the world’s transportation demand is committed to electric vehicles by 2050, driven by smart government policies and business commitments supported by Drive Electric Campaign’s network of partners.

But clean transport and its benefits – from workers saving money on fuel to children breathing cleaner air – are not yet equally distributed. The goal of the Leapfrogging Partnership is to accelerate access to clean, affordable electric vehicles all over the world.
